6.3: Film Good Video on Your Phone: Light, Angles and Sound in Your Shop for About $50

To make phone video look good, you only need to get three things right, in this order: light, a steady phone, and then sound. A phone stand and a small ring light, about $50 in total, are enough to make your shop's videos look noticeably better.

Many owners think their videos look bad because the phone is old. Usually that's not it. A brand-new phone filming in a dark corner still looks bad. An older phone next to a window still looks good.

Let's go through each piece, then three sample setups for a nail salon, a spa and a restaurant.

First, the free part: phone settings

Before you buy anything, do these five things:

  1. •Wipe the lens. It sounds silly, but it's the number one cause of blurry video. A phone in a nail salon collects dust and oil all day. Wipe it with a soft cloth before every shoot.
  2. •Use the back camera. It's always sharper than the selfie camera.
  3. •Hold the phone vertically. Reels, TikTok and Shorts are all vertical.
  4. •Lock focus and exposure. On an iPhone, press and hold on your subject until "AE/AF Lock" appears. The phone will stop changing brightness mid-shot.
  5. •Turn on the grid. Go to Settings → Camera → Grid. The lines help you keep the phone straight.

For quality, 1080p at 30 frames per second looks great on social media and won't eat your storage.

Light: the thing that matters most

Think of it this way: light is to video what broth is to pho. If the broth is off, nothing you add will save it.

Free light: a window

Daylight through a window is the best light there is, and it costs nothing.

  • •Put your subject near the window, with light coming from the side or the front.
  • •Don't film into the light, meaning don't put the window behind your subject. It will turn into a dark silhouette.
  • •If the sun is harsh, pull a sheer curtain across to soften it.

No good window? Use a ring light

A ring light is a circular lamp with a phone holder in the middle. It gives even light with no harsh shadows, which is ideal for hands and nails.

Pick one with adjustable brightness and colour (cool white to warm yellow). Keep it neutral. Too warm and the polish colour will look wrong.

A common mistake: mixing two kinds of light

Yellow ceiling lights plus white window light make skin look odd. If you can, switch off the ceiling lights where you're filming and use one main light source.

Steadiness: a phone stand

Shaky video gets swiped past. A tripod fixes that and frees both your hands.

Three kinds are useful in a shop:

  • •Standing tripod: sits on the floor, films at eye level. Good for wide shots of the shop.
  • •Mini desk tripod: small, sits on a nail desk or dining table.
  • •Gooseneck clamp: clamps to the table edge, bends, and films straight down. This is the best option for a nail desk or food shots.

No stand yet? Lean the phone against a stack of books or a box of polish. It still beats holding it.

Sound: worry about it last

If your videos are just music and text, you don't need a microphone yet.

You only need one when:

  • •Someone speaks in the video (describing a dish, explaining a service).
  • •You're filming ASMR and need crisp filing or sizzling sounds.

In that case, a small clip-on lavalier mic that plugs into your phone is plenty. Check your phone's port before you buy (Lightning or USB-C).

A free tip: turn off the shop music, turn off the fan, and film during a quiet hour.

What to buy first: a suggested budget

Prices below are rough estimates in Canada and vary by seller. Search Amazon.ca or a local electronics store using the terms in the table.

Buy orderItemSearch termApprox. price (CAD)
1Phone stand"phone tripod" / "gooseneck phone holder"$15–30
2Small ring light"ring light with stand"$25–40
3 (if needed)Clip-on mic"lavalier mic for iPhone/Android"$15–30

Buy items 1 and 2 first, about $50. Leave the mic until you really need it.

3 sample setups for your shop

Setup 1: Nail desk, filmed from above

  • •Gooseneck clamp on the desk edge, phone pointing straight down.
  • •Ring light angled from the front, slightly above the hands.
  • •Lay a plain-coloured towel or mat (white, beige, grey) under the customer's hands.
  • •Clear bottles and wipes out of the frame.

Setup 2: Spa room

  • •Standing tripod in the corner, filming diagonally toward the bed.
  • •Use the room's warm lighting, adding the ring light on low if it's too dark.
  • •Film the therapist's hands and the products up close. The customer's face isn't needed.
  • •Fold the towels neatly and hide the cables.

Setup 3: Restaurant, filming a dish

  • •Choose a table right by the window and film in daylight.
  • •Mini tripod on the table, or a gooseneck filming from above.
  • •Film the moment the dish arrives, while it's still steaming.
  • •Wipe the plate rim and move napkins and extra glasses out of the frame.

Quick check before you press record

  • •☐ Lens wiped
  • •☐ Phone vertical and fixed in place
  • •☐ Light coming from the front or side
  • •☐ Background tidy, nothing extra in frame
  • •☐ Customer has said yes

Quick recap

  • •Priority order: light → steadiness → sound.
  • •Wipe the lens, use the back camera, film vertically, lock focus.
  • •A window is a free light. Otherwise use a ring light.
  • •A starter kit is about $50: a stand and a ring light.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to buy to film video for my shop with a phone?+

The first two things to buy are a phone stand and a small ring light, about 50 Canadian dollars in total. A clip-on mic is only needed when someone speaks in the video or you're filming ASMR. Before buying anything, wipe the lens, use the back camera and film near a window, since those are free.

Why does my shop's phone video look dark and blurry?+

Usually one of three causes: a dirty lens, too little light, or filming into the light with a window behind your subject. Wipe the lens with a soft cloth, move the subject near a window with light from the front or side, and fix the phone on a stand.

How should I position my phone to film at a nail desk?+

Use a gooseneck clamp on the desk edge so the phone points straight down. Angle a ring light from the front, slightly above the hands, and lay a plain-coloured mat under the customer's hands. Clear bottles and wipes out of the frame.

What resolution should I film at for social media?+

1080p at 30 frames per second looks good on Reels, TikTok and Shorts without using much storage. More important than resolution is holding the phone vertically, using the back camera, and locking focus and exposure before filming.
