ChatGPT Ads Are Live in Canada at $25 a Day: Should Your Shop Run Them?

People have been asking me: "I heard you can advertise on ChatGPT now — can my shop do it?" Short answer: yes, in Canada, starting at CAD 25 a day. But three things matter before you spend a dollar: the ad is a small box that sits below the answer, paying does not make ChatGPT recommend your shop, and some industries are banned outright in Canada — including dental, immigration and insurance.

I read all of OpenAI's official documentation and wrote it out here in plain language. No jargon.

What are ChatGPT ads, really?

Picture this. A customer opens ChatGPT and asks: "Any good nail salons in Vaughan that do ombre?" ChatGPT answers in text as usual. Then right below that answer, a small box appears with an image, a business name, a short line of text and a link. The corner of the box says "Sponsored".

It works like ads on Google: the answer is one thing, the ad is a separate thing sitting beside it.

A few more facts:

  • •Not everyone sees ads. Only people on the free plan and the cheap Go plan ($8). Anyone paying for Plus, Pro or a business plan never sees ads. Neither do users under 18.
  • •ChatGPT does not hand your customer's conversation to you. You only get totals: how many people saw the ad, how many clicked. No names, no emails, no chat content.
  • •Some topics never carry ads: health, mental health, politics.

No. This is the part I want to say loudest, because some people are selling it wrong.

OpenAI states it plainly: ads run on separate systems, and advertisers have no way to change ChatGPT's answers. Which means:

  • •Spend money → you get the ad box underneath. That's it.
  • •Want ChatGPT to name your shop inside the answer → money can't buy that.

So how do you get named? The same way I've always told you: a complete and accurate Google Maps profile, plenty of real reviews, and a website that clearly states what you do, where you are and what it costs. AI reads those before it names anyone. There is no shortcut.

If someone calls offering to "sell you a spot in ChatGPT's recommendations", hang up. That product does not exist.

What does it cost?

From OpenAI's own documentation:

ItemAmount
Minimum per dayCAD 25
Suggested bid per clickUSD 3–5
Long-term commitmentNone. Run a week and stop
Current promoSpend USD 500, get USD 500 credit (read the terms)

And here's what businesses that actually spent money report (not official numbers):

  • •Out of 100 people who see an ad, fewer than 1 clicks. On Google it's about 6. Far fewer clicks.
  • •A click costs USD 3 in some markets, up to USD 22 in others.
  • •A US home-services company spent USD 5,000 over three weeks and got poor-quality leads.

One detail that catches people out: CAD 25 a day is an average across the week. On one day it can spend double that. A total campaign budget is safer.

The biggest problem: the dashboard doesn't match reality

I have to be blunt here, because it costs you money.

Many advertisers report that OpenAI's dashboard shows a lot of clicks while Google Analytics shows very few visitors:

  • •One saw 57 clicks reported, under 20 visits on the site.
  • •Another saw 120 clicks reported, 8 sessions counted.

It's like getting an invoice for 100 boxes and finding 8 in the stockroom. Nobody has explained it clearly yet.

On top of that, the reporting is missing tools Google and Facebook have had for years, and OpenAI publishes no benchmarks for what "good" looks like.

Which Canadian industries CANNOT advertise?

This is the most important part for our community, and most online guides skip it. Per OpenAI's ad policies (updated 10 September 2026), outside the US:

  • •❌ Health: dental, medical clinics, medical or cosmetic spas.
  • •❌ Legal and immigration: law firms, immigration consultants.
  • •❌ Finance: insurance, mortgages, loans.
  • •❌ Specific housing or job listings (banned everywhere).
  • •❌ Alcohol-focused ads, gambling, dating, politics.

What is allowed right now:

  • •✅ Local services — nail salons, hair salons, auto repair, cleaning.
  • •✅ Restaurants and cafés (as long as alcohol isn't the hook).
  • •✅ Retail and online stores.
  • •✅ Travel, tickets, events.
  • •✅ Tutoring centres and online courses.

In short: nail salons, restaurants, hair salons and shops can run it. Dental and immigration cannot, for now.

Is there anything genuinely good about it?

Yes, which is why I'm not telling you to skip it entirely:

  1. •You reach people while they're deciding. Someone asking ChatGPT is comparing options, not scrolling for entertainment.
  2. •Small entry cost. CAD 25 a day, no commitment. Test three or four weeks and stop.
  3. •Few competitors. Very few Ontario shops run this channel yet, so click prices haven't been bid up the way they have on Facebook and Google.

My six-step plan for you

Step 1 — Check your industry first. If you're in health, legal, immigration or finance, stop here. Don't let anyone sell you something that can't run.

Step 2 — Set up tracking before you spend a dollar. Install OpenAI's pixel (a small snippet on your site that records who arrived from an ad) and add UTM tags to your links (extra characters after the URL that tell Google Analytics this visitor came from ChatGPT). Without both, you're flying blind.

Step 3 — Use a total budget, not an open-ended daily one. For example CAD 750 across four weeks. When it's spent, it stops.

Step 4 — Write narrow descriptions. ChatGPT doesn't use "keywords" like Google; it uses "context hints", where you describe the situation your customer is asking about. Don't write "nail salon Toronto". Write something like "customer looking for a Vaughan nail salon that does ombre and has evening hours".

Step 5 — Check two numbers every week. One: clicks OpenAI reports. Two: real visitors on your site in Google Analytics. Trust the second one.

Step 6 — Decide your kill rule before you start. After four weeks, if the cost per real customer (a call, a booking) is more than double what Facebook or Google delivers for the same shop, turn it off and revisit in six months. Nothing lost.

What to do next

The short version:

  • •ChatGPT ads are real, available in Canada, CAD 25 a day.
  • •It's a small ad box under the answer, not praise from ChatGPT.
  • •Measurement is weak — clicks aren't trustworthy yet, so add your own UTM tags.
  • •Dental, immigration and insurance in Canada cannot run it today.
  • •Treat it as a test channel. Keep your main budget on Google Maps, reviews and Facebook, which still bring customers more reliably.

If you want to try it and don't know where to start, we'll do it for you: check whether your industry is eligible, install the pixel and UTM tags, write the descriptions, run a test on a budget you approve, then report the real numbers weekly. You pay the platform directly for ad spend — we never handle it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Canadian shop run ChatGPT ads yet?+

Yes. Canada is on the list of countries with self-serve access to ChatGPT ads, with a minimum daily budget of CAD 25 and no long-term commitment. Businesses sign up at ads.openai.com.

Does paying for ads make ChatGPT recommend my business in its answers?+

No. OpenAI states that ads run on separate systems and advertisers cannot alter ChatGPT's responses. To be named inside an answer you need a complete Google Maps profile, real reviews and clear website content.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost per month?+

About CAD 750 a month at the CAD 25 daily minimum. OpenAI suggests bidding USD 3–5 per click. Note that a single day can spend double your daily budget, so a total campaign budget is safer.

Can a dental clinic or immigration consultant in Canada advertise?+

Not today. Under OpenAI's ad policies, health, legal and financial services are prohibited or generally prohibited outside the US. Dental clinics, medical clinics, immigration consultants, insurance and mortgage brokers in Canada cannot run these ads.

Why does OpenAI's dashboard report more clicks than my site sees?+

Many advertisers hit this: dashboards showing 57 or 120 clicks while Google Analytics records only a handful of visits. The cause has not been clearly explained. Protect yourself by adding UTM tags to every ad link and trusting your own analytics.
