Reddit for AEO: How to Get Your Shop Recommended When Customers Ask ChatGPT & Google AI

Have you noticed something lately? Customers don't just Google anymore. Many now ask ChatGPT or Gemini directly — "What's a good nail salon in Mississauga?" — and the AI answers on the spot, naming a few shops. The million-dollar question: how do you get your shop onto that list? The short answer: get your shop's name mentioned on Reddit. Because AI trusts Reddit and pulls answers from it. Let me explain why — and what you can actually do.
What is AEO? In plain words
You've probably heard of SEO — making your shop show up first when someone Googles "nail salon near me."
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the new version of that, built for the AI age. Simply put: getting the AI to name your shop when a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google AI.
The big difference:
- •Old Google gave you 10 links to click through.
- •AI gives one direct answer — usually naming just 3–4 shops.
If your shop isn't one of those 3–4 names, the customer never sees you. The game is harder, but whoever starts early wins big.
Why does AI trust Reddit so much?
Reddit is a giant forum where real people gather to chat, praise, and complain — like an online flea market where everyone speaks their mind. Three reasons AI loves it:
1. Google pays Reddit. Google signed a deal worth about $60 million a year to use Reddit's data. So Reddit content shows up heavily in Google's AI answers.
2. It's real people, not ads. When you praise your own shop on your website, everyone knows it's self-promotion. But when a stranger writes on Reddit "just went to this place in Toronto, great gel work and fair prices" — that's proof. AI trusts that far more than an ad.
3. Customers actively search Reddit now. Try Googling "best nail salon Toronto reddit" and see how many posts pop up. People trust each other more than they trust ads.
In short: Reddit is word-of-mouth, but written down where AI can read it.
What this means for your shop
Say you run a phở restaurant in Ottawa. Someone just moved to town and opens ChatGPT that night: "Best phở in Ottawa?"
- •If a few people have praised your spot on Reddit → the AI is likely to name you.
- •If Reddit is completely silent about you → the AI names your competitor.
That difference is real customers, real money. And the beauty is: you don't need to pay for ads — you just need to show up in the right place, the right way.
How to use Reddit — step by step
This is the most important part. Reddit hates obvious advertising — jump in selling and you'll get banned instantly. Here's the right way:
Step 1: Make a real account and "warm it up"
Don't create an account and immediately promote your shop. Reddit sees that as spam. Instead, spend the first 2–3 weeks just answering a few questions helpfully — like a normal person. It's like moving to a new neighborhood: you say hello to the neighbors first, you don't knock on doors selling.
Step 2: Find your "groups" (subreddits)
Reddit is split into thousands of topic-based groups called subreddits. Find the ones your customers hang out in:
- •By city: r/toronto, r/mississauga, r/ottawa, r/askTO (where Torontonians ask everything).
- •By industry: r/Nails, r/RedditLaqueristas (nail lovers), r/FoodToronto (food lovers).
Step 3: Give first, get later
This is the golden rule. Don't ask for anything — give free knowledge first.
Say someone asks "how do I make my gel nails last without lifting?" — you're a salon owner, so answer generously with real tips. At the end you can gently add: "at our shop in Mississauga we usually handle it like this...". That's enough. People get curious and come to you.
Step 4: Tell real stories, don't brag
Reddit loves real stories — even the failures. Share about a picky customer and how you fixed the mistake. Honesty always beats polish.
Step 5: Be consistent — about 3 times a week
You don't need much. Consistency beats volume. Contribute a few helpful answers each week, and slowly your shop's name shows up naturally all over — and that's exactly what the AI reads.
Deadly mistakes to avoid
Let me be blunt so you don't waste your time:
- •Don't spam. Copy-pasting one ad everywhere = permanent ban, and it hurts your reputation.
- •Don't argue with critics. If someone talks trash, stay calm or ignore it. Fighting only makes your shop look bad.
- •Don't use robotic, empty language. Redditors sniff out "AI-written" content and fake ads instantly. Write like a real person talking.
- •Don't rush. Reddit is a long game — results take 2–3 months. It's not a button that delivers customers instantly like a Facebook ad.
What to do next
Three sentences to remember:
- •AEO = getting AI to name your shop when customers ask. And Reddit is one of the places AI trusts most.
- •The method: make a real account → find the right subreddits → give free knowledge → tell real stories → stay consistent.
- •Avoid: spam, arguing, empty language, and rushing.
You don't have to do it all at once. This week, just make an account and browse r/toronto or r/Nails to see what people are saying. That alone is a first step.
